After a doctors appointment and a haircut today I ... did no writing and little else, utterly absorbed in this. I’m simultaneously incredibly impressed with the investigative work, and deeply unsettled by the ethics of MUP publishing it (and by the ABC 7.30 report segments it’s drawn from), when the police investigation was still live. Not because I give credence to the conspiracy/witch-hunt accusations against Milligan et al, but because surely it’s unfair to the complainants to risk a mistrial on the basis of prejudice? It’s striking that the surviving victim in the Cathedral case gave Milligan little and didn’t want to talk to her: did that count in his favour as a credible witness? She paints his reluctance to talk as trust issues, but it strikes me as extremely smart for a man in his position. . And yet: the reporting is very good, very careful work. If it had been released post-conviction I would have no qualms at all about it. And it does seem from the final chapter that Milligan, and many of her sources, simply had no expectation that Pell would ever leave Rome to stand trial. . #auslit #nonfiction
