speculumannorum:

Ceiling and eastward view of the Chapel of the Maccabees.

For obvious reasons, the tomb of a catholic cardinal did not survive the Reformation - it was subdivided, turned  into a salt store, and later ‘used by the academy’ (what academy? Signage did not say).

In the 19th c it was restored in what the signs tell me is neo-gothic style. Neo-gothic as I know it is dour and stone-coloured - I LIKE THIS BETTER. The frescoes follow the patterns and designs of the original 15th c decoration.

Throwback to: January 2014. Most Extra part of the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre.
